The TripleThreat TM training program is composed of multiple
special-emphasis training sequences covering various aspects of the offensive game, such as, attacking
the basket, shooting on the move, beating the defender off the dribble, passing and faking, postup moves
and countermoves, and moves on the perimeter to make space and get open.
Each training sequence consists of four 75-minute sessions (one per week). Each training session
devotes a certain portion of time to mastering solid fundamental footwork and ballhandling skills, while the
remainder of the session focuses on the particular aspect of the offensive game that is being emphasized
for that specific training sequence. Certain skills are revisited each week to allow the athlete to
further develop and refine their ability to the perform the skill. The athlete is encouraged to continue
to work at home on skill areas that are deficient, for mastery can only come through repetitious effort.
The TripleThreat TM program is designed to start with the
fundamental elements of footwork and ballhandling, and then put these elements together in ways that will
increase the effectiveness of an offensive scorer. Ball-control and body-control are emphasized as
mission-critical skills. Precision and attention to detail are constantly stressed and pursued.
Occasionally, Dartfish video analysis may be used to allow the athlete to analyze their performance.
The different TripleThreat TM special-emphasis training sequences
that LoneStar Basketball Academy has developed are listed below along with a description of some of the
skills/drills covered by each.
- DribbleThreat TM
This sequence provides special emphasis on using dribble skills to score or place the defense at a
disadvantage. Skills/drills include: change of speed, change of direction (i.e., crossover);
one-dribble basket attacks; speed dribble; control dribble; power dribble; go-dribble; pull-back dribble;
pound dribble; chill drill; Stellato drill; McCormick drills.
- ShotThreat TM
This sequence provides special emphasis on proper footwork and positioning to become a more effective
shooting threat. Skills/drills include: catch and shoot, shooting off the dribble, 2-count
foot-stop (1-2 step); 1-count foot-stop (hop-stop); shot-fake, go-dribble, shot; spinology; read-the-screen
shots; bank-shots; jab and shoot; step-back shooting; split-the-defenders; transition pull-up shot.
- PassThreat TM
This sequence provides special emphasis on using the pass to position a score. Skills/drills
include: pin-point passing; chest pass; bounce pass; shoulder pass; overhead pass; baseball pass;
skip pass; touch pass; lob pass; shuffle pass; behind-the-back pass; dribble pass; outlet pass;
post-feed pass; kick-out pass; inbounds pass; pass fakes; jump-stop, air'em pass; pull-back pass;
back-door pass; shooter's pass.
- PostThreat TM
This sequence provides special emphasis on becoming a threat inside the lane and around the basket.
Skills/drills include: posting up; getting big; sealing; power moves; repositioning; back-to-the-basket
moves; pivot and face moves; counter-moves; jump-hook; sky-hook; drop-step; Sigma; Mikan; spinology; high-low
picks and screens; lob finishes; put-backs.
- PerimeterThreat TM
This sequence provides special emphasis on becoming a threat on the perimeter. Skills/drills
include: V-cuts and L-cuts; picks and screens; hard-to-guard; penetrate and dish; attack the gaps;
post feed and repositioning; pass and cut; step-back shooting; engaging two defenders; hunting the paint;
one-dribble attacks; strategic positioning.
Skill Level:
The TripleThreat TM program
has two separate training levels to accomodate differences in age and ability:
- Level One is for athletes 8 through 12 years of age and/or inexperienced
older athletes.
- Level Two is for experienced athletes 13 years of age and older. Level
Two proceeds at a more accelerated rate. It introduces additional details and incorporates some advanced
techniques not covered at Level One.
