3PlayTM is a training program designed to
offer game-like situations in a 3-on-3 format for applying specific offensive/defensive strategies and skill
techniques. These skills and strategies are isolated and practiced during the station-based drill portion
of each training session. Then, during the controlled-play portion of the session, players will
have a chance to apply these skills and strategies within a 3-on-3 team play format.
Offensively, the skills and strategies covered (depending on time and skill levels) may include: dribble
drives; penetrate and dish; pick and roll; screen away; give and go; V-cuts, L-cuts, and flash-cuts; post-ups;
pull-ups and step-backs; rebounding and put-backs; spacing and "hard to guard" concepts.
Defensively, the skills and strategies may include: on-the-ball defense; off-the-ball defense; blocking out
and rebounding; close-outs; defending screens and the pick and roll; help and recover; run and jump; defensive
rotations; post defense and footwork.
As stated, the 3PlayTM program utilizes
"controlled" 3-on-3 play to provide opportunities for each player to utilize the techniques and strategies that
have been emphasized. 3-on-3 play is advantageous for allowing each player to have frequent opportunities
to touch the ball and be involved in the action. It is often used by coaches during try-outs to evaluate
how players might perform during game situations.
